THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala wants authority to be given to states to oust governor in case of dereliction of duty. Kerala has asked the Center to allow assembly to expel the Governor in case of violation of the Constitution, lapse in chancellor’s post and faults in criminal prosecution proceedings. Kerala demanded this to the Center while replying to the Punchhi Commission report.

Justice M M Punchchi Commission had recommended the removal of governors from the post of chancellor. The center sought the opinion of the states in this regard. The last cabinet meet had approved the report submitted by the legal secretary.

Even during the tenure of former chief minister Oommen Chandy, Kerala had given a favorable recommendation to this demand. This decision will help to avoid disputes between the government and the governor over appointments in universities.
