Haridas (54) of Punnol, a CPM activist was hacked to death near New Mahe in Thalassery at 2 am early Monday morning. He was a fisherman. He was hacked to death in front of his house while returning from work. The miscreants arrived in two bikes. He was hacked to death in front of his family. His brother Suren sustained hack injuries when trying to prevent the attack.

His right leg was completely severed. Though he was rushed to Thalassery Cooperative Hospital, his life could not be saved. His body has been shifted to Pariyaram Medical College. A fight broke out between the CPM and the BJP a week ago in connection with a festival. A hartal is being observed at Thalassery municipality and New Mahe panchayat.
