KALPETTA: The Kalpetta district sessions court awarded death sentence to accused Viswanathan in the double murder case at Kandathuvayal Vellamunda in Wayanad. He was found guilty on charges of murder, robbery, house breaking, destruction of evidence etc. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh and this should be given to the couple’s family.

The double murder was committed on July 6 in 2018. Ummer (26) of Vellamunda and his wife Fathima (19) were found murdered in their bedroom. Viswanathan who entered the couple’s bedroom tried to rob the chain of Fathima, who was sleeping.

When the couple tried to resist the robbery, the accused beat them to death with an iron rod. After confirming their deaths, he took the ornaments worn by Fathima and then strew chilli powder in the house and premises. The court which considered the case observed it as the rarest of rare.
