SANAA: The court has deferred its verdict on the appeal of Nimisha Priya, 33, from Palakkad, who was sentenced to death for killing a Yemeni citizen. Dramatic events unfolded before the court while the case was being considered. Relatives of Talal Abdu Mahadi, who was killed, and locals protested in front of the court. Hundreds of people have demanded Nimisha Priya's death sentence be upheld.

The Indian ambassador to Sana'a has also stated that the protest is strong, as Nimisha's lawyer argued in court that the death penalty should be commuted to life imprisonment on the grounds of being a woman.

Talal Abdu Mahadi, a Yemeni national, was killed on July 25, 2017. Nimisha Priya, who was running a clinic with Talal, was arrested in the case. The lower court sentenced her to death. Hanan, a Yemeni colleague, is also facing trial in the case. Nimisha Priya claimed that Talal, who had offered to help her start her own clinic while working as a nurse, had confiscated her passport and tried to marry her, which led to his murder. Nimisha was brutally tortured by Talal, following which he was injected with an overdose of a drug on the instructions of a young woman who worked at the clinic and another young man.
