Disputes over trivial issues turning into severe disputes of political hatred and later on becoming brutal killings have become a regular occurenece in the state. Thalassery in Kannur, which has been infamous for political assassinations, is once again in the news. Fifty-four-year-old Haridasan,a fishermen who returned home after fishing on Monday morning, was hacked to death by political opponents. He had more than 20 stab wounds and was rushed to hospital. The left leg, which was amputated by the attackers, was later found in the yard. This incident shows the brutality of humans. It is said that a minor dispute during a temple festival in his own village led to this incident. Doesn't this show that politicians are there to ignite any trivial quarrel? The CPM blames that RSS-BJP activists for Haridasan's brutal murder. Surendran, the brother of the deceased, who was also injured in the attack, has told the police that he can identify two criminals.
Nowadays personal issues are turning into political assasssinations. These killings are happening because people on both sides lose their senses in politics and also due to failure in leadership. Also, common people from poor family background are always the victims of such killings and the sufferings of their family members are often forgotten. 250 political murders have happened in Kannur district in the past 50 years.
Peace meetings and swearing-in ceremonies are conducted after each murder. It is said that those who are behind the killings will be brought to justice. But often such cases goes astray. The police must be given full authority to deal with criminals in such cases. There should be no interference in the investigations. Police should be able to anticipate and prevent the possibility of clashes in areas where strong politics prevails. Those who are capable of it should be appointed as the head. Everyone should understand that no political victory is going to be achieved by slaughtering and killing people. Political parties must realise this and prevent any such possible incidents.
