KPAC Lalitha's acting and life was a textbook with many chapters. She made those so special in a way they cannot be imitated. But the 'Lalitha' lesson they created in the film is that they made the acting so natural that it created the feeling it is easy. With the demise of KPAC Lalitha, the world of cinema has lost one of the greatest actresses of all time in India.
Actors can generally be divided into two categories. One from safe and sound life situations and the other from struggling conditions. Lalitha was from the second category. Dancing and singing she learned as a child, her acting experience through the drama troupe KPAC, and her extraordinary observation of life she got by performing in front of thousands of audiences all over Kerala - all these elements are the cornerstones of the acting career of the actress Lalitha. That's why she made it look so easy to portray so many different characters so effortlessly, but so intuitively.
Born in Ramapuram near Kayamkulam as the daughter of photographer Ananthan Nair and Bhargavi Amma, Lalitha's first name was Maheshwari. Lalitha started her career as a drama actress who can sing and act. There, the great Thoppil Bhasi became her guide. Trips and acting with KPAC Sulochana and KS George, who are immortalized in music and acting alike in the minds of Malayalees, have added extraordinary sparkle to Lalitha's artistic career. That was the time of KPAC's golden age in the theater. Lalitha became a part of KPAC through the play 'Ashwamedham'. Lalitha became a Communist Party sympathizer in those days, something which she carried on till death.
Lalitha's first film was Koottu Kudumbam directed by KS Sethumadhavan. Later, Lalitha became an integral part of the film.
Undoubtedly, Lalitha's dialogue delivery is world-class. She could demonstrate the depths of acting through various emotions, whether it is sad, despair, joy and so on.
Lalitha made her presence felt in the film industry during the heydays of Sathyan and Prem Nazeer. She has been active in the film industry for over half a century with different generations. When Vaikom Mohammad Basheer's 'Mathilukal' was made into film directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan, she made history by portraying the character 'Narayani' through sound. Lalitha's performance with Innocent in Manichitrathazhu directed by Fazil entertained us with good humour.
Lalitha, who is married to director Bharathan, has also played notable roles in his films. Her roles in Aaravam, Kaattathe Kilikkoodu, Amaram, Venkalam, Keli, and Churam were notable.
Sathyan Anthikkad, who gave her the best roles in her acting career, brought Lalitha back to cinema after Bharathan's demise. Lalitha played many unforgettable characters in Sathyan Anthikkad's films. Veendum Chila Veettukaryangal, Thalayanamanthram, Manasinakkare, Achuvinte Amma are some of those. Lalitha also acted in Sathyan's son Anoop Sathyan's movie 'Varane Avashyamund'.
Lalitha has won the National Award for Best Supporting Actress in Amaram and Jayaraj's Shantham and has won six state film awards. She died while serving as the chairperson of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy.
Lalitha is an actress who has survived the ages. Though she has passed away, she will be remembered as long as there is Malayalam film industry. We bow down before her memories.
