KOZHIKODE: The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal has ordered to pay Rs 7.04 crore as compensation in the case of Moideen Chonari (52), an expatriate from Munniyoor in Malappuram, who died in a road accident. This is the highest compensation allowed in a motor vehicle compensation petition in the district.

The tragic incident took place in June 2017. Moideen, who was on leave, was hit by a KSRTC bus on the road near Calicut University. He died at the spot. He was the sole breadwinner of a family consisting of parents, wife and four daughters. The compensation was based on the salary received while working in Qatar and the number of dependents in the family.

The judgment also directed to pay 8 percent interest on the compensation amount and court costs from 2018, when the petition was filed. The compensation is to be paid by the New India Assurance Company. Advocate MC Ratnakaran appeared for Moideen's family.
