PK Anaz, a civil police officer at Karimannoor station, has been dismissed from service for leaking the personal details of political leaders to the SDPI. There have been several incidents where information pertaining to cases handled by police was getting leaked. Several people often benefit from it. It was in the midst of such incidents that this police officer got dismissed for leaking personal information of political leaders. The action was taken following a detailed investigation. SDPI activists had attacked a KSRTC driver who had shared a communal post on Facebook. It was found that Anaz had secretly provided information from the police database to help an SDPI activist arrested in this case. He was also charged with various offences which were not in line with the police. Investigations have revealed that he often used to leak information about various party leaders. Anaz had even written a letter to the President asking him to remove the Lakshadweep administrator. Needless to say, these are things that one should not do as a cop. In many ways, the decision to dismiss a person who was found unfit to remain a police officer was a good one. This action should be a lesson to those who neglect the zeal and sense of duty that the policemen must necessarily maintain.
The government has the power to take exemplary disciplinary action for any act that affects the dignity and honour of the force. However, the truth is that the government does not take such action even in serious cases. Records show that more than 900 people in the police force have criminal backgrounds.
It is not surprising that confidential information related to cases and others is getting leaked from the police. Even some high officials are involved in leaking such information. The disappearance and alteration of evidence and clues are also common occurrences. In several cases, police officers, who go on raids, return empty-handed as the information regarding the raid is leaked even ahead of the raid. The reality is that several policemen have strong political leanings. No one can be fired for maintaining political thinking. However, a policeman should not behave in a way tarnishing the image and status of the police force while wearing the uniform. Actions like demonstrating political bias and acting in a partisan manner are not in line with the impartiality of the police. Actions such as demonstrating political bias and acting in a partisan manner are not in line with the impartiality of the police. It is the responsibility of the higher officials to ensure that the police personnel are on the right track. It is the duty of the police to keep confidential not only the personal details of political leaders but also any documents held by the police. In a state where political assassinations, clashes and violence are frequent, the future could be dire if police abandon neutrality. Anyone found leaking information from the police should be dismissed from service. That is why the action against Anaz is exemplary.
