NEW DELHI: Amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine, India has initiated steps to evacuate more than 18,000 Indians stranded in Ukraine via neighboring countries such as Belarus, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary. Indian embassy officials yesterday instructed students and others to move to the western part of the country where the attacks are not severe.

The Air India flight AI 1947, which took off from Delhi at 7.40 am yesterday to pick up Indians, returned after the airports in Kiev closed down.

In another statement, the Indian embassy said that students and others in the area where the widespread attack took place, including Kiev, should find nearby underground bunkers and take shelter. They also provided a link issued by Kiev district administration with information on the location of the underground bunkers. The embassy has advised that no one should go out unnecessarily and keep passport in hand while going out.
