THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CPM will have a new six-storey building as its headquarters. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday laid the foundation stone of the building near the AKG Centre in Thiruvananthapuram.

The new building will be constructed on 31.95 cents of land purchased by the party opposite the AKG Centre, the current headquarters of the party. The plan is to build an eco-friendly green building. The CPM aims to inaugurate the building within a year and a half.

The new headquarters building is envisioned to have a spacious conference hall, state secretary's office, press conference hall and visitor's room. The AKG Centre is located on land alloted by government. The land was allotted to the AKG Memorial Committee in 1977 by AK Antony-led government.

CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan presided over the foundation stone laying ceremony of the building. Politburo member S Ramachandran Pillai released the design of the building. PB member MA Baby switched on the piling work of the building. Central Committee members A Vijayaraghavan, AK Balan, KK Shailaja, Ananthalawattam Anandan and MM Mani were present.
