The world is revering a Ukrainian soldier who has sacrificed his life for his country. Marine battalion engineer Vitaly Skakun Volodymyrovych, who was deployed to the Henichesk bridge in the southern province of Kherson, blew himself up without a second thought, as the Russian tanks invaded the area.

Vitaly and his team’s only goal was to stop the Russians at any cost. The only way to achieve it was to blow up the Henichesk bridge. But, the unexpected invasion by the Russian tanks did not offer them enough time to carry out a safe explosion. Thus, the Ukraine army decided to take action and Vitaly volunteered to do it.

According to his fellow soldiers, Vitaly got in touch with them and said he was going to blow up the bridge. Immediately after that an explosion rang out.

The world came to know about the incident through a Facebook post by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, describing Vitaly’s sacrifice as heroic act. Even though a fellow soldier lost his life, the battalion was determined to fight tirelessly for their country.

This is not the first time that the Ukrainian soldiers have shown unimaginable courage in the face of death. On Thursday, the first day of the invasion, the Russian troops were forced to kill 13 Ukraine soldiers, who had positioned themselves in the Snake island in the Black sea, refusing to surrender.

An audio clip explaining what had happened in their last moments, has gone viral now. “This is a military warship. This is a Russian military warship. I suggest you lay down your weapons and surrender to avoid bloodshed and needless casualties. Otherwise, you will be bombed,” said a Russian officer in the video.

To which a Ukrainian soldier reportedly responded that they will never surrender. A huge explosion was heard later. Meantime, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he acknowledges the sacrifices made by the soldiers and said that they will be honoured with the highest national title ‘Hero of Ukraine’ medal.
