THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Without any tension of sectarianism and with the backing of the organizational leadership that ensured LDF rule for a second time, the CPM is heading towards its state conference. The conference which aims to evaluate the activities of the past three years, will rejuvenate the leadership, in context of its continued governance. Even though some sectarian activities at the local levels have annoyed the leadership, caution is being taken to prevent it from spreading to the leadership level.

The Ernakulam state conference ahead of the 23rd party congress aims to expand the party’s organizational strength from the tranquil atmosphere in which the party and administration are moving along, in the same direction. The main agenda is to increase the party’s mass influence. The conference will also approve the policy outline focusing on Kerala’s future development. It will be crucial in the context of the party’s attitude shift towards a complete reformist development approach. The CPM is planning to discuss the organizational empowerment agenda, on the basis of its self-assessment that despite being the largest party in Kerala, it has not been able to grow into a majority movement.

Ernakulam remains the only district where the left front was unable to ensure influence even after coming to power, with huge success in 2016 and 2021. The party is also considering political strategies to increase its organizational strength in the district. As per CPM’s evaluation, Ernakulam’s inclination towards the right, is due to the large middle class and rising affluent groups as a result of urbanization. The party will also discuss the political strategies to get into such centres.

As the new middle class grows stronger in a globalized and liberalized society, the party will adopt programs that will attract them more. The party is also aware of the widening gaps between the rich and poor. The pandemic has further impoverished the society. The CPM is cautious of the moves adopted by the minority-majority communities to exert their influence in the state. The conference will also discuss about the adoption of an ideology that can promote left-consciousness amid the spread of superstitions and immoral rituals which are holding back our society.
