NEW DELHI: CPM General Secretary Sitaram Yechury has said that Russia's arguments are justified on Ukraine issue. "The security of one country should not be sacrificed to ensure another country's security. It is better to end the war as soon as possible for everyone's good," the statement said.
The statement said that the attempt to include Ukraine in the NATO alliance was a threat to Russia's security and that the NATO alliance and its missile system on the Eastern European border were seriously affecting Russian security.
Full version of the statement
Russia's military action against Ukraine is unfortunate. War must end immediately and peace must prevail. Attempts to include Ukraine in the NATO alliance pose a serious threat to Russian security. NATO alliance on the Eastern European border and their missile system greatly affect Russian security. Therefore, Russian security concern and the argument that Ukraine should not be included in NATO are justifiable. Following the disbandment of the Soviet Union, NATO forces moved into the eastern region. That was contrary to the assurances given by US. At the same time, US and NATO's rejection of Russia's demand and their moves to send more troops to the battlefield accelerated the problem. Peace in the region can only be achieved if the concerns of the people, including those in the Donbass region of eastern Ukraine, are addressed. The Government of India must ensure the safety of thousands of people, including students in Ukraine, and take steps to evacuate all Indians from the battlefield.
