KOLLAM: Adarsh was once told by Medical Science that he won't be able to stand up on his own feet. The same guy has now won nine gold medals in powerlifting and bodybuilding. 23-year old Adarsh Harrish, a native of Kollam, is all set to participate in the National Para Power Lifting Championship to be held in Kolkata next month.
Adarsh was born with a rare disease called Spina bifida, which causes damage to the spine and legs. He was born in Dubai as his mother Sujaya worked there. The doctors who examined the child said that it would be difficult for him to walk. His legs got twisted when he was about to walk. Sujaya returned home with her son and sought treatment at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. After three surgeries and physiotherapy, the legs became a bit stable.
Adarsh, who was saddened when his classmates participated in sports and won prizes, started walking through continuous exercise. At the age of fourteen, he went to the gym to increase his leg mobility and strength. The confidence he gained from there, brought him to the Para Body Building competition venue.
In 2015, Adarsh has won gold medal and Mr Kollam title, but he had to settle for fourth place in all Kerala competition. Then in 2016, he bagged gold medal in both district and state level competition. He won gold medal consecutively for the next five years. He later moved to powerlifting and won the gold medal in 70 kg category in his first attempt. In 2021, he was ranked fourth in Mr India Para Body Building competition.
Adarsh graduated from Fatima Mata National College, Kollam and later passed a Fitness Certificate Course. His father is Harrish, who runs a business in Kollam. MBA student Abhilash and plus one student Divya are his siblings.
"I am happy that my life has been an inspiration to those who are physically challenged. I like to pay more attention to powerlifting. Classes are being offered online for those who have queries.", said Adarsh
