SYDNEY: Australian cricket legend Rodney Marsh died on Friday. He was in coma after suffering a heart attack during a public event, last week. He is one of the best wicket keepers in the history of Australian cricket. He played 96 test matches for Australia and had a career spanning 13 years. Rodney Marsh was an integral part of the team captained by Ian Chappell.
Marsh made his cricketing debut in 1970 and retired in 1984. He is well-known for his wicket-keeping partnership with pace bowler Dennis Lillie. They have a combined record of 95 wickets, which had dismissed numerous opposition batters. He was the team’s wicket keeper during the controversial under-arm bowling incident of 1981. Grey Chappell, the then captain, had directed his younger brother Trevor Chappell to use under-arm bowling in order to win against New Zealand. At the time, Marsh was very disappointed with the decision. He has been the chairman of the Australian cricket team selection committee and the selector of the England national team that won the Ashes series in 2005.
