KOLLAM: A scam has taken place in the name of state police chief Anil Kant. A gang has embezzled Rs 14 lakh from a teacher in Kollam through a fake WhatsApp account. The teacher, a native of Kollam, received a message on WhatsApp saying that he had won an online lottery.

The message stated that the winner should hand over the tax amount to the company before receiving the winning prize. The complainant then sent a message to the company enquiring about its details. Following this, she received a message with a photo of the DGP. The message stated that the complainant must either pay the money or face legal action. The message, sent in the name of the DGP, also stated that the DGP was in Delhi.

The teacher then contacted the Police Headquarters. Upon receiving a reply that the DGP was in Delhi, she thought that the WhatsApp message might be genuine. Following this, she sent the money to the account mentioned in the message. Police have initiated an inquiry into the incident.
