KYIV: Russia continues shelling in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, where a ceasefire has been declared. Authorities in Ukraine said that they have stopped evacuating people to safer areas. There are reports that there is no corridor to evacuate people.
Russia has announced a ceasefire in Mariupol and Volnovakha from 12.30 pm on Saturday as part of Russia-Ukraine talks in Belarus on March 3. The ceasefire was aimed at evacuating people from the area. The decision was made in response to repeated requests from around the world. Authorities said that more than two million people need to be evacuated from Mariupol.
Meanwhile, Russia is not ready to comment on the ceasefire violation in Mariupol. Russian Foreign Ministry said that Ukrainian authorities have detained people in Mariupol and Volnovakha. Russia's Defense Ministry says Ukraine has detained 1,755 foreigners, including about 1,500 Indian students. Russia has accused Ukrainian forces of beating 20 Pakistani students as they tried to cross the border into Russia from Sumi.
