MOHALI: Ravindra Jadeja broke former India captain Kapil Dev's 35-year old record with his 175 runs century against Sri Lanka. Jadeja today surpassed the record for the highest score by an Indian batsman who is at or below seventh position in Test cricket. Kapil's performance was against Sri Lanka in the 1986 Test in Kanpur. He scored 163 runs that day.
Ravindra Jadeja is only the third Indian to score more than 150 runs in Test cricket. During the tour of Australia in 2019, Rishabh Pant had earlier landed at number seven and scored over 150 runs. He scored 159 runs for India in the Sydney Test that day. Apart from these three, another player who has done well for India at number seven is former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Dhoni's scored 144 runs against South Africa in 2011.
Ravindra Jadeja's high power batting performance helped India to gain a huge score. Batting first innings on the second day of the Mohali Test, Sri Lanka lost three wickets while scoring 100 runs. Skipper Karunaratne (28), opener Thirimanne (17) and Angelo Mathews (22) were out. Karunaratne was dismissed by Jadeja and Thirimanne was dismissed by Ashwin. Ashwin also dismissed Dhananjaya de Silva (1). As match ends on the second day, Sri Lanka's score is 108-4 in 43 overs.
Earlier, India had declared at 574 for eight in 129 overs. Ravindra Jadeja scored 175 runs, the second century of his career, led India to a huge score. Jadeja hit 17 fours and three sixes in his 228-ball innings. Along with Jadeja, Mohammad Shami scored 20 off 34 balls without getting out. The duo put on a partnership of 103 runs for the ninth wicket.
On the first day, all the Indian batsmen played well. Rishabh Pant and Hanuma Vihari (58) scored 96 off 97 balls with superb shots. While batting his 100th test, Former India captain Kohli (45) was dismissed, however, was dismissed after completing 8,000 runs in Tests. On the second day, Ashwin provided excellent support to Jadeja. Ashwin scored 61 off 82 balls.
