KOTTAYAM: 42-year old Deepa Mohanan, who did jeep racing and drove a taxi for livelihood, has now become an ambulance driver. Deepa will be the first woman driver of 108 ambulances in the state on Tuesday. Her strength is her confidence of handling crisis in life.

Minister Veena George intervention helped Deepa to gain this job. Minister Veena George will hand over the keys of the ambulance to Deepa at 10.45 am on Women's Day in front of Secretary Annexure II.'

Deepa had an interest in vehicles sice her childhood. She first learned two wheeler driving. After marriage, she learnt car and bus driving. When her husband Mohanan became ill, she started a driving school to meet expenses. Deepa also worked as a taxi-driver when his health deteriorated.

After moving to Kuruppanthara in 2016, her dreams took off. She joined the two-wheeler riding group Motor Angel, which is exclusively for women. She later bought a two-wheeler, the Domina 400, and turned to riding. In 2021, Deepa also went to Ladakh. In 2019, she started off-road racing in a group member's Mahindra Jeep. Although she was unfamiliar, she competed and won the event 'Kunnamkulam B12'. Her son Deepak also gives full support to his mother.
