KOCHI: Ernakulam Government Medical College has cancelled the controversial procedure of exempting foreign medical graduates from appointments. An interview will be held again today to give them a chance.

A controversy had erupted after an interview for the junior resident post was conducted by inviting applications only from Indian graduates. The interview took place on March 4. The notification, inviting applications for the interview, had mentioned that only Indian graduates will be considered for the appointment. Following this, doctors who studied abroad and their parents reacted against the notification. The officials later came up stating that it was a clerical error.

The principal informed that any foreign graduate, who has successfully obtained recognition from the State Medical Council, can participate in the interview.

'Kerala Kaumudi' had reported on Saturday that the interview was conducted by excluding foreign medical graduates. Following this, Foreign Medical Graduates Parents Association informed the college authorities of their protest. The Association of MD Physicians, an organization of foreign graduates, filed a petition in the High Court following a report by Jemma James, a member of the association's district executive committee. The court directed that no further action be taken in the interview held on March 4.
