KANNUR: A couple was arrested in Kannur with drugs worth around Rs 1 crore.

Afzal (33) and his wife Balkis (31) from Muzhappilangad were arrested by the police at the parcel office in Thekkibazar. City Police Commissioner R Elango said two kilograms of MDMA and brown sugar were found in what was the state's largest drug bust. The drugs were smuggled in a bus from Bangalore.

Kannur Town Police Inspector Sreejith Koderi and his team made the arrests following a tip-off received by Kannur City Police Commissioner R Elangovan. The couple arrived at the parcel office in Thekkibazaar yesterday afternoon to receive a parcel.

The commissioner said that MDMA worth Rs 1 crore was seized for the first time in the history of the state.

The drugs were smuggled in parcels from Bangalore in tourist buses. Balkis was previously under police and excise surveillance. The city commissioner said they are also investigating their clients.
