KYIV: The Indian students evacuated from Ukraine’s Sumy were moved to Poltava. There are more than 600 students in the group. They will be moved to Lviv from Poltava via train, accompanied by Indian embassy officials.

A total of 694 Indian students stranded in the Ukrainian city of Sumy were transported to a safe place in Poltava via 12 buses. Russia has declared ceasefire to facilitate evacuation, on Wednesday. The ceasefire will come into effect from Indian time 12:30 noon.

On Monday, many students had waited for the bus for about three hours amid bitter cold, but were unable to leave. India had then asked the UN for safe humanitarian corridors to evacuate the students. Meantime, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Both the leaders had assured assistance in the evacuation of students stranded in Sumy. Soon after, the evacuation was made possible as Russia agreed to arrange a security corridor.
