marriage

BENGALURU: A minister’s daughter has sought refuge at the police commissioner’s office in Bengaluru, with a complaint stating that her life is under threat as she married a youth from a backward caste. Jayakalyani, the daughter of Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister PK Sekar Babu, has approached the police for protection, following her marriage. The woman complained that some DMK activists had beaten her and her husband. She has lodged a complaint with the Women’s Commission as well.

Jayakalyani and Sekar Babu’s driver Sathish Kumar got married on Tuesday, after being in a relationship for six years. The couple tied the knot with the help of a Hindu organization, overcoming family opposition. Subsequently, some DMK activists went to Satish Kumar’s house and threatened his relatives. We were assaulted by the DMK activists at the register office. Somehow, we managed to escape and reached Bengaluru, Jayakalyani told the police. She added that they are receiving threats that if they return to Tamil Nadu they might lose their lives.

The couple had tried to get married in September, last year. However, Sekhar Babu caught them and had Satish Kumar arrested. He was kept in custody for two months. Sekhar Babu is a minister who took stringent action against the temple authorities who had denied temple entry to backward communities. The pictures of the minister, having a meal with a young woman who was denied entry on grounds of caste, had then triggered a huge discussion on social media. Nevertheless, strong criticisms have surfaced against the minister’s stance in his daughter’s matter.
