AMRITSAR: The AAP is leading in Punjab as predicted by the exit polls. In the results of the first two hours, the AAP is leading in 90 seats. The AAP is also making strides in the Akali Dal strongholds. The Congress currently has 18 seats and the BJP three. The Shiromani Akali Dal got two seats.
In Punjab, 59 seats are required for a simple majority. The AAP has been leading with a remarkable lead, overtaking the Congress from the first stage of counting of votes. In the 117-member Punjab Legislative Assembly, the AAP is sure to grab power. Meantime, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Channi is trailing in two seats.
For the first time after Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party is all set to take power in another state. Bhagwant Singh Mann is the AAP's chief ministerial candidate. The BJP, which had severed ties with the Shiromani Akali Dal, contested by joining hands with the Punjab Lok Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal. The Shiromani Akali Dal along with the BSP contested the elections.
