NEW DELHI: With just a few hours to go before the announcement of the final results of the assembly polls in five states of the country, the BJP is poised to secure victory in all four states. BJP is currently leading in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Uttarakhand and Manipur. In Punjab, the AAP has proven its strength by ousting the ruling Congress. The Congress has suffered miserable defeats in all five states. The BSP, which continues to remain in a single-digit lead, was not able to regain power, but has performed rather well. It needs to be noted that the AAP has gained strength outside Delhi.

The BJP is advancing in Uttar Pradesh with a clear seat lead. As per the latest reports, the party is leading in 263 seats, including the power centres of Congress and farmers’ protests. All the ministers including Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is leading as per reports. SP is leading in 135 seats. Congress and BSP are advancing only in two and one seats respectively.

In Punjab, the Congress has suffered huge defeat. The BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal are also facing a similar situation before the AAP. The present Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi is behind in both seats. Former Punjab chief minister and BJP candidate Amarinder Singh has failed miserably in Punjab. He has been relegated to the fourth position as the counting of votes in Patiala comes to an end. AAP’s Ajit Pal Singh has won there. Punjab PCC President Navjot Singh Sidhu, who contested from Amritsar East, has also lost. He was relegated to the second place. AAP’s Jeevan Jyot Kaur has won here with a total of 34,257 votes. As per latest reports, the lead level in the state is: AAP-91, Congress-19, BJP-2 and SAD-4.

In Uttarakhand, BJP has secured the lead following tough fights. It is leading in 48 seats. Congress is in the second place leading in 18 seats. Others are leading in four seats. Majority of the exit poll surveys had predicted a strong fight in the 70-seat state. BJP had a clear upper hand in the first round of results. In the beginning, the AAP had a lead in one seat, but is now out of the picture. The survey results had predicted that AAP will win one seat in the state. ‘Give AAP a chance’ was the party’s slogan in the Uttarakhand poll campaigns.

The BJP is set to become the single largest party in Manipur, leading in 33 out of 60 seats. The Congress has failed to take the lead in even half of the number of seats it had won in 2017. It has secured lead only in five seats.

In Goa, where the counting of votes has entered its final phase, the BJP is aiming to continue its rule with a lead in 19 seats. Congress is right behind, leading in 12 seats. Trinamool Congress and AAP are leading in three and two seats respectively. A total of 332 candidates had contested in 40 assembly seats.
