LONDON: The future of Premier League club Chelsea FC is in doubt as Britain imposes sanctions on the Russian tycoon Roman Abramovich. British authorities on Thursday tightened the measures against Abramovich. Although, British officials have said the team will be allowed to continue playing in the league, but the sanctions could have a detrimental effect on the team's future.
Abramovich knew in advance that Britain would impose sanctions on him so he tried to sell all his assets in Britain, including Chelsea club. Abramovich has demanded three billion euros for Chelsea. But the sale did not take place as no one was interested in acquiring the club for such a large sum. He also tried to sell all three of his villas in the UK.
While Britain have made it clear that they will allow the club to play, the question is that how the club will manage without Abramovich, who has been banned from spending money in UK. Especially for keeping with top clubs Manchester City and Liverpool they have to acquire players at huge cost. If club officials are unable to find a new owner before the next transfer market opens, it is certain that Chelsea will fall behind in the points table next season. Chelsea are currently third behind Manchester City and Liverpool.
