election

Every election creates some memorable moments in political history. With the results of five state assembly elections coming out, the most startling political story is coming from Punjab. AAP has moved beyond the confines of Delhi and became the youngest political party to come to power in Punjab. That too with a three-fourths majority and with authenticity. UP , Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa are with the BJP as predicted. According to the results, the BJP will come to power in all the four states. In this, the second term of BJP Chief Minister Adityanath in UP is remarkable in many ways. This is the first time in three decades that any party has retained power. In spite of many adverse factors, the steps taken to reach out to the people and ensure their support should be considered effective.

AAP's landslide victory in Punjab is going to be the most talked about election victory. Arvind Kejriwal's AAP has defeated Congress and won 92 seats in the 117 -member assembly. With the takeover of Punjab, AAP will now be in power in two states. The election results in Punjab shows just how dissatisfied and outraged they were at the Congress rule that completely forgot about the people and their problems. AAP learnt their lessons from the Delhi experiments. They interacted with the people and asked their problems. They did not forget to share what they intends to do for the people when they come to power. He only put forward things that people could believe. The election results show that the approach was successful.

The results are in line with the predictions in UP. Though he could not repeat his landslide victory of 312 seats in the last elections, Yogi Adityanath has managed to secure a good majority. Akhilesh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party, who came out in full force in the hope of ousting BJP and taking over the government, can only be the Leader of the Opposition. However, he managed to challenge Adityanath by winning more than 70 seats, more than last time . Samajwadi Party candidates won 126 seats. The election also saw the complete collapse of Mayawati's Bahujan Samajwadi Party, which once ruled UP. The same thing happened to the Congress. In 2017, it got at least seven seats, but this time it fell to two seats. The fact that Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka campaigned hard in UP but to no avail, shows the depth of the party's deterioration. Priyanka has attended more than 200 rallies. About 150 women were nominated.

The BJP has managed to stay in power in Uttar Pradesh amidst many adversities. It can be said that the party leadership and Chief Minister Adityanath worked hard to take advantage of the negative factors. Like AAP in Punjab, Adityanath has reached out to more people in UP. A number of welfare schemes were implemented. He deliberately stayed away from all controversial issues like Ayodhya, Kashi and Mathura. Instead, the emphasis was on development activities implemented by the government. During the Covid period, arrangements were made to provide basic necessities to poor families. In five years, 40 lakh houses have been built for the poor and infrastructure development projects were implemented including a large network of medical colleges. The most important is the measures taken to suppress anti-socials and goons. The measures taken to prevent corruption in the administration also increased the acceptance of the government among the common people. It is an achievement that the seven-phase voting was completed in an extremely peaceful manner. Women voters came to cast their votes in large numbers. This is one of the reasons for the BJP's victory.

The Congress had hoped to be in power in Uttarakhand and in Goa. With the last series of defections in Goa, the Congress allowed the candidates to file their nomination papers after being sworn in by the Constitution. Candidates were transferred to the resort immediately after voting. BJP is the largest party in the Manipur assembly. If majority is less than two or three, other parties are sure to come to the rescue.

As the election results have come out, it is time for the parties for some analysis. There will be plenty of study, discussion and evaluation. It is important to understand where the tactics and approach had gone wrong. As usual, the Congress has the most to learn from the defeat. What reason would the party give to the people for their defeat? The move to ignore leaders who openly express their disregrad must not be followed. The G-23 leaders, who have been branded as insurgents, are once again raising their voices. Do you hear it or not?
