NEW DELHI: Two chief ministers, former chief ministers and party chiefs are among the prominent leaders who bit the dust in the elections in five states.
Double blow for Channi
Punjab Chief Minister and Congress chief ministerial candidate Charanjit Singh Channi lost to Aam Aadmi Party in both the constituencies. In Chamkor Sahib, Channi got 50,000 votes and Aam Aadmi Party's Charanjeet Singh got 54,000 votes. In Bhadaur, he lost to Aam Aadmi Party's Lab Singh Ugoke by 23,000 votes.
Former Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh was defeated in Patiala.
Though the BJP came to power in Uttarakhand, the defeat of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in the sitting seat of Khatima was a major setback. He lost to Congress' Bhuwan Chandra Kapri by 6579 votes.
Former Congress chief Harish Rawat lost in Lal Kuan.
Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Kumar Lallu lost his seat in Tamkuhi Raj. Lallu was one of the seven Congress MLAs who won the last election.
In Goa, Manohar Parrikar's son Utpal Parrikar lost to Panaji.
Shiromani Akali Dal's Prakash Singh Badal, 94, the oldest candidate in Punjab's history and five-time chief minister, lost to AAP's Gurmeet Singh Khudian in Lambi. Khudianu got 66,313 votes while Badal got only 54,917 votes. Badal's son and party leader Sukhbir Singh Badal lost in Jalalabad. Here, Aam Aadmi Party's Jagdeep Deep Kamboji won with 91,455 votes while Sukhbir got 60,525 votes.
Swami Prasad Maurya, a minister who left the BJP and joined the SP before the elections, lost in Fazil Nagar.
In Amritsar East, Punjab PCC president Navjot Singh Sidhu lost by 6750 votes. AAP's Jeevanjyot Kaur won here.
