NEW DELHI: The party leadership is set to discuss the pathetic performance of the Congress in the assembly polls in five states, including Uttar Pradesh, a state where the whole political world had its eyes on. The working committee meeting to be held on Sunday, will discuss the reasons behind the party’s collapse in the polls which has hinted that all the opposition parties including Congress are becoming irrelevant. The meeting will be held at 4:30 pm on Sunday.
The Congress had secured 6.25 percent votes in the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls in 2017. This is 5.4 percent less than the vote share in 2012. The situation is similar in other states as well. In the 2017 elections, the Congress had won 38.5 percent votes in Punjab. This has now dropped to 23.3 percent. Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi lost in both constituencies from where he had contested. PCC President Navjot Singh Sidhu also got defeated.
In 2017, the party which won the most number of seats in Goa was the Congress. Now, it was only in second place. In Manipur, the vote share was 35 percent in 2017, this time it fell to 17 percent. Shashi Tharoor and other G23 leader has demanded an immediate solution to the party’s problems. The party workers are also of the opinion that consultations are needed to improve the party’s leadership in order to win the Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat assembly polls to be held later this year and the forthcoming elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
