KOCHI: One cannot wish to become a doctor by writing all supplementary exams together. It has been proposed that the new MBBS requirement will be considered for other medical courses including Ayurveda, according to which if a student fails in more than two exams in the first two years, they have to study in the same class.
Earlier, the students would be promoted to next class even if they fail. They only had to write and pass supplementary examination. The Medical Commission of India has changed this since last year's admission. Their first year examination was held recently. Result has not been published. If you fail in more than two subjects, you will be given a chance to write and pass the exam. If the student does not pass, he will have to study again in the old class with the junior batch. This may apply to exams in subsequent years as well.
This is part of the requirement to complete the course in a timely manner and to become a competent doctor. The change have not been implemented in BDS and BSc Nursing. Medical degree courses like Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Siddha and Unani may implement it. The Ayush Council will take a decision after getting concerned opinion.
The Medical Commission of India is discussing reforms including the use of vernacular languages along with English for MBBS studies. It is part of the National Education Policy of the Central Government. The decision will be made after receiving feedback from universities, colleges and students.
"These matters are decided by the national councils. Universities must abide by it. Such measures are aimed at raising the standard of medical education.", said Dr. Mohan Kunnummal, Vice Chancellor, KUHS
