NEW DELHI: The Central Government has verbally supported the move to avoid the death penalty for Nimishapriya, a Palakkad native who is awaiting execution in the murder case of a Yemeni citizen. The Delhi High Court has directed to submit official declaration on Tuesday.

Save Nimishapriya international action council has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court seeking the Centre's intervention to save Nimisha Priya's life. The petition seeks for Center's intervention at the diplomatic level. Delhi court will reconsider the petition on Tuesday.

Sanaa's appeal court upholds Nimishapriya's death sentence in Talal Mahdi's murder case last Monday. Nimishapriya wanted to be acquitted or spared from the death penalty on the grounds of being a woman.

Now the Supreme Judicial Council in Yemen is her only hope. But the Supreme Judicial Council is only likely to examine whether the appeal proceedings were correct. To avoid the death penaltyTalal Abdumahdi's family was given blood money, but the attempt was unsuccessful. On July 25, 2017, Talal Mahdi, a Yemeni citizen, was killed by Nimisha Priya and hid the body in a water tank.
