NEW DELHI: The central government has informed the Delhi High Court that it will make appropriate arrangements for Nimisha Priya, a Malayalee woman sentenced to death in Yemen court, to appeal for release. The centre will also facilitate the travel of persons to negotiate with the victim Talal’s family.
The centre clarified its stance in the high court during the hearing of the plea, filed by Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council, which sought centre’s intervention to save her life.
Nimisha Priya was awarded death sentence by an appellate court in Sanaa last Monday for murdering Talal Abdo Mahdi, a Yemen citizen. However, she had asked to be acquitted or spared the death penalty on grounds of being a woman.
Now, the Supreme Judicial Council in Yemen is the only hope left for Nimisha Priya. However, the Supreme Judicial Council is only likely to examine whether the appeal proceedings were accurate or not. An effort was made to pay blood money to Talal Abdo Mahdi, but it did not succeed. Talal Mahdi, a Yemeni national, was killed by Nimisha Priya on July 25, 2017. His body was found hidden in a water tank.
