THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With Kerala witnessing a steady decline in the number of Covid cases, the government has started discussions on lifting mask mandates in the state. The government sought the views of members of the expert committee set up for the prevention of Covid and health experts in this regard.
The panel of experts also suggested that there was no harm in stopping the compulsory use of masks. According to the panel, wearing masks should be made voluntary. It also suggested that people with symptoms should be advised to wear a mask when going out.
The government is considering gradually lifting the mask mandate as the disease subsides. However, it has not made a decision on a date from which the mask mandate can be lifted. Discussions in this regard are taking place. The panel also said that the mask could be made mandatory in areas where the disease is more likely to spread.
Health officials are of the view that masks could be avoided if a new wave of Covid does not occur. Mask was made compulsory in the state two years ago.
