BEIJING: Amid the severe surge of Covid-19 cases in China, 13 cities are moving towards lockdown. Last day, the country recorded the highest daily Covid cases in two years. More than 3,000 cases were reported.

The first Covid-19 case was reported in the Chinese province of Wuhan in December, 2019. The country reported around 85,000 cases by April 2020. Since then the cases have decreased.

The disease spread has intensified again in the last three weeks. Since February 18, the daily case numbers have crossed hundreds. On an average, 700 cases have been reported in the country within the last 10 days. However, there has been no rise in the death toll.

Currently, Omicron and Delta variants are spreading in China. Concerns of new variants are prevalent among researchers. It is also feared that this might be the fourth Covid wave.
