high-court

KOCHI: There should be an internal complaint redressal cells in the film sector, said the Kerala High Court. The verdict was based on the plea filed by Women in Cinema Collective (WCC). The complaints should be examined and there should be a cell to solve the issue in all film locations, the court ordered. The high court made an important intervention in the field of Malayalam cinema.

WCC approached the court seeking an internal complaint redressal cell in film locations in 2018 soon after the actress was attacked. The state women’s commission informed the court that their demand was reasonable. The high court made the commission a party on January 31 in 2021.

Culture Minister Saji Cherian responded that the need for legislation to ensure the safety of women working in the Malayalam film industry was justified. He said yesterday that after studying the report of the Adoor Gopalakrishnan Committee and the report of the Justice Hema Committee, a law would be enacted soon and that women in the film industry often face severe exploitation.
