NEW DELHI: The UGC has released draft guidelines of a new education policy that will pave the way for a comprehensive overhaul of undergraduate and postgraduate studies in the country. As per the UGC's proposal, holders of four-year undergraduate degrees with a minimum CGPA of 7.5 will be eligible for admission to PhD programmes. Those who have completed 4 years of graduation need to complete a one-year course for a postgraduate degree.

Through the four-year undergraduate study, the student will have the opportunity to gain comprehensive knowledge by learning multiple subjects. The student will also be able to focus on selected subjects. Meanwhile, the current three-year undergraduate and two-year PG programmes will continue. Students can choose what they like. The duration of PhD courses will be increased to a maximum of six years. 60% of the vacancies will be filled by NET / JRF qualified candidates and the rest will be through universities, entrance exams and interviews.
