MALAPPURAM: A temporary gallery collapsed at Poongode in Vandoor during a sevens football match, injuring several people. Fifty people were reportedly injured in the incident. The injured were admitted to Manjeri Medical College Hospital and various other hospitals in Vandoor. As per reports, no one was seriously injured. The makeshift gallery collapsed during the final game of a football tournament. About 3,000 people were present to watch the match at the time of the incident.
The accident occurred when the final match between United FC Nellikuth and Royal Travel Kozhikode was about to start. It is learned that the organizers did not expect such a large crowd and no security measures were put in place on the ground to control them. The tournament was organized by a group of young people from the area. The crowd gathered beyond expectations as Saturday was a holiday.
The collapsed gallery was on the east side of the ground. The temporary floodlight stand attached to the gallery also collapsed with it. Most people got injured as floodlights fell on them. Several other people were injured in the ensuing push and pull.
