MUKKAM: Students were fined as the college farewell celebrations crossed limits. The final year graduation students of Mukkam Kalanthodu MES College, celebrated their farewell in the middle of the road riding JCBs and other modified vehicles. The incident took place at 11 am on Thursday. The JCB’s driver is said to have shouted at the locals, who questioned him for driving dangerously. The driver’s response when questioned was ‘do what you can’, said the locals.
As the incident stoked controversy, the motor vehicles department soon reached the spot. Action was taken on grounds such as travelling dangerously on the bulldozer’s hand, overcrowding vehicles with students, lowering the car's side windows, sitting in the doorway and putting head and body outside through the windows. Cases have been registered against the modified jeep and other identifiable vehicles, said the motor vehicles department. Most of the vehicles are rented. We are trying to find the owners of the vehicles, said the officials.
The rally was conducted on three JCB, cars and bikes. There were boys as well as girls. The visuals that got circulated on social media had trapped the students. The JCB and cars were soon taken into custody. Strict action will be taken in the incident, said regional transport officer P R Sumesh. The license, of those who drove dangerously crossing speed limits, will be suspended. Cases will also be registered against the parents who drove without license.
