MAVELIKKARA: The police arrested four people for grabbing an amount of Rs 59,500 after threatening an old woman for installing bamboo curtain. The arrested are Baiju (30) of Sooranad, Sudheer (36) of Chakkuvalli, Aji (46) of Sooranad and Basheer (50) of Chakkuvalli. Their vehicle was also seized.

The team who reached the house of an old woman living alone in Mavelikkara Kottarkavil said that it is enough to pay Rs 570 per piece to install the bamboo curtain. Although the old woman said that she is not interested in installing the curtain, the accused realizing that there was no one else in the house, installed the curtain in the sit out and gave a bill of Rs 59,500.

The other accused left the old woman's house after one of the accused went to the bank and withdrew the money. District police chief G Jayadev formed a special investigation team led by Chengannur DySP Dr R Jose in the wake of similar incidents being reported in various places. By the time the investigation team identified the culprits and reached Chakkavalli, they had already fled the place. Their hideout in Sooranadu was found and the four were arrested.

It has been reported that they have committed similar scams in more places. The victims should contact the Mavelikkara station, police said. The accused were arrested along with SIs Amshu, P S Ali Akbar and CPOs Vinod Kumar and Sunil Kumar.
