With Thalekkunnil Basheer's demise, a period when political issues were important beyond individuals are almost gone. There was no need to say the word secularism in every sentence back then. Throughout his life, Basheer was known not only for his caste or religion but as an ideal Congressman. He followed a style that adhered to many of the ideals of the time in his own life and politics.
As time goes on, those who do not repeat hollow words and make tactful moves will be pushed back. Flat reading, thought, and friendships outside of the party may have prompted Thalekkunnil to form such a view. He had no hesitation in taking a step back without fear. He started his political career as an energetic activist of KSU. He used to practice writing and reading at that time. Initially, he was a regular contestant in speech competitions, essay writing and short story writing. He won many prizes for that. From the very beginning, he was able to impress his own party members and opponents through his impeccable interventions in the public sphere. He represented Chirayinkeezhu in the Lok Sabha in 1984 and 1989. He twice became a member of Rajya Sabha.
As a parliamentarian, he focused on popular issues. In 1977, he vacated the Kazhakoottam Assembly constituency to allow AK Antony, who was the Chief Minister, to contest. He later became the DCC President and KPCC Vice President. Thalekkunnil was an exception when many people increased their bank balance through political activity. No personal loss has deterred him from the path of party work. He was convinced till the last moment that the survival and growth of the Congress Party was essential for the progress and religious harmony of the country and he devoted his life to it. He has been resting at his residence in Vembayam for the past few years due to a heart condition. From the beginning till the end, he maintained a cordial relationship with Kerala Kaumudi. His personal relationship with Kerala Kaumudi was invaluable.
Thalekkunnil, who maintained close friendships with all the senior leaders of the Congress, had a very good rapport with former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. He has also written a book on Rajiv Gandhi. Thalekkunnil's study classes were highly commendable. He also believed that only a generation with a full sense of democracy could lead the Congress. Religion and caste did not have much influence in politics during the heyday of Thalekkunnu. Event management politics didn't exist. Basheer bids adieu with the memories of the good old days are left behind.
