MUMBAI: The new season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), which starts today in Mumbai, will be played in a double round-robin format. The double round-robin is a format that is less tried. The more prominent round robin is a tactic used by most organizers to excite spectators when there are only a few teams in the competition. The round-robin format is where all the teams playing in the tournament play each other and the two teams with the most points play in the final. But what is this double round-robin format?

There are ten teams in the IPL this time. Each of these ten teams will be divided into two groups of five teams each. There will be 14 matches in the preliminary round for each team. In this, the teams will face four teams in their own group twice. The next step is to face the first four teams with the most points in the opposing group one time and the last-placed team twice. The top four teams in the two groups will advance to the playoffs.

Group A: Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants

Group B: Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans
