THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Governor denied permission to amend the rules of Kannur University to reorganize the Board of Studies on its own without informing the Chancellor. Under the University Act, the Governor has the power to nominate the Chairman and members of the Boards. The university amended the existing law by withdrawing the power of the governor to nominate while a petition was pending before the division bench. The board selection, which was assigned with preparing syllabi and textbooks for various courses and approving the panel of question paper makers, became controversial in excluding senior teachers from government and aided colleges and including self-financed college and contract teachers without UGC qualifications.
The High Court dismissed only two boards, as only the Vice-Chancellor and members of the two study boards had filed the petition as opposing parties. Save the University's campaign committee chairman, R.S. Sasikumar said that he has requested the Governor to dismiss all boards who were reorganised illegally and to nomiate new board members.
