KOLKATA: Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee has written a letter to the country's non-BJP chief ministers following the BJP's demand for a presidential rule in West Bengal in the wake of the Birbhum clashes. In the letter she urges all non-BJP leaders to come together for a unified and principled opposition.

Let us fight together to form a unified and principled opposition against the Central Government. Democracy is under attack in the country. Central agencies are being misused to suppress dissent against the government. In the letter, Mamata urged the progressive forces of the country to unite to fight the BJP rule which is oppressing the people and the opposition.

Mamata said that she is writing the letter to express deep concern over direct attacks on this country's institutional democracy by the ruling BJP. Opposition leaders must unite in the fight against the BJP which is in power at the Centre and in most states. She also demanded that a meeting of non-BJP chief ministers and opposition leaders to be convened to discuss how to fight against BJP together. She requested all leaders to be prepared for a meeting.

On March 21, unidentified persons hurled 10 petrol bombs at eight houses in Bogtayu village near Rampurhat and burnt eight people to death. The investigation team had arrested 22 people, including Trinamool Congress Rampurhat block president Anarul Sheikh, in connection with the incident. The case is currently being investigated by the CBI.
