KOZHIKODE: A tall Punjabi Beetal, a powerful and magnificient Jamnapyari, like this Thiruvambadi native Jacob Thomas's(Jose) farm has several stars of the goat world. After living abroad for 16 years, Jose earns an income by raising variety of goats. His income is not less than Rs 50,000 per month.
He started the farm started with cows and goats. Realizing that cow breeding is not profitable, he focused is only on goat. Goat breeding started in 1996. The farm has about 85 goats of various breeds including Malabari, Sojath, Sirohi, Hyderabad and Wayanad breed. Most of them gives three to five liters of milk. Although good income is earned from selling milk, it is fed to the lambs without even using it for household needs. The income comes from raising and selling kids, crossing of goats and their buying and selling. Many farmers and goat lovers visit Jose's Farm.
68-year old Jose and his wife, Mary, are preparing to expand their goat breeding business as part of the government's farm tourism program.
Jamnapyari, which is famous for its meat and milk, is very familiar to Malayalees through the film of the same name. The color of Jamnapyari is generally white and brownish whitePrices range from Rs 30,000 to Rs 70,000 for Jamnapyari. 30,000 to 1 lakh for Beetal goat. Rs 15000- 20000 for kids. Prices range from Rs. 15000 / - for crossbred goats.
