WASHINGTON: The US sanctions on Russia in response to the Ukraine invasion is nearing failure. The US policy has begun to fail as countries, including India, started to import oil from Russia, despite sanctions. Following this, the US has come forward in criticism of countries, including India, for not abiding by the sanctions. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki clarified the US’ stance in a press conference last day. The US expects every country to abide by the sanctions, Psaki said.
The US does not believe it is in India’s interest to accelerate or even increase the imports of Russian energy and other commodities. India’s imports of Russian energy are only 1-2 percent of New Delhi’s total energy imports. Meantime, a direct question about India’s Russian oil imports had provoked Psaki. In response, she stated that the US expects all countries across the world to abide by the sanctions imposed by Washington against Russia.
Russia had recently said that the US continues to import oil and gas from Russia and that its volume has increased. The statement was made by Russian Security Council Deputy Secretary Mikhail Popov in context of the American companies agreeing to increase Russian oil imports.
