COLOMBO: The political crisis has worsened in Sri Lanka with the government losing its majority. About 40 MPs withdrew from the ruling coalition and became independent. With this, the government's attempt to form an all-party national government failed.

All 26 cabinet ministers, except the prime minister, resigned on Sunday. Among those who resigned was the Prime Minister's son, Namal Rajapaksa. Namal tweeted that he was resigning from all positions to find a solution to the current problems.

Gotabaya's brother and finance minister Basil Rajapaksa had also resigned. Instead, former Justice Minister Ali Sabry was given charge of the finance ministry. However, he too resigned before completing 24 hours in the office.

Sri Lanka still faces severe shortages of food, fuel and other essentials. The energy crisis in the country is also severe. A state of emergency was declared in the country around midnight on Friday in the wake of the financial crisis and protests.
