THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Despite applying for MBBS admission, Idukki and Konni Govt. Medical colleges are not sanctioned by the Medical Commission. There are no applicants to start new medical colleges in the self-financing sector. As all admissions are conducted on the basis of NEET, self-financing colleges are not able to collect donations as in the past. That is the reason for the lack of interest.
Konni could not meet the requirement of a hospital that had been in operation for two years. There is only OP in the hospital. There is no inpatient treatment. 300 beds are not available in Idukki hospital. There are only 120 beds. The new hospital block is just getting ready. At the same time, an additional 50 seats were allotted in the self-financing college in Kochi, which provided adequate facilities.
The process of targeting 100 MBBS seats in Konni started in 2015. But due to denied approval from Medical Council, it is still cannot admit students. Idukki Medical College has given admission to 50 students each in the years 2014 and 2015. The Medical Council canceled the accreditation of both batches due to lack of infrastructure.
"Admission to Idukki and Konni may be allowed next year if the inadequancies are rectified." said Dr. CP Vijayan, Pro Vice-Chancellor,KUHS
