THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Summer rains are expected in the state in the coming days, weather officials said. "There will be heavy rains like in the previous days. The southern districts are likely to receive more rainfall. Rainfall will be normal in central and northern districts. There is a chance of strong winds and lightning with rain.

Summer rains will also be prevalent in the northern districts by the end of this month. Till yesterday, the average rainfall was 64.9 mm with 32 per cent extra rainfall. The summer rains came due to the increase in the strength of the east wind and the increase in humidity. Summer rainfall may increase further today due to low pressure being formed in the Bay of Bengal.

Monsoon in the first week of June

The southwest monsoon begins in the first week of June. The Meteorological Department has forecast normal rainfall. The eastern Pacific Ocean temperature drop is expected due to the effect of La Nina.
