COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan Parliament has come up with a new tactic to revive the economically crippled country. It has decided to impose a tax on the richest people in the country in order to garner some quick revenue.

The Sri Lankan Parliament has passed a surcharge bill to impose a surcharge tax on the rich. The law was passed by the Parliament without any voting. As per the law, a 25 percent windfall tax will be imposed on companies and individuals who earned more than 2 billion Sri Lankan rupees in the financial year 2020-21.

It was former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa who proposed to impose the tax. The government expects to garner a revenue of Rs 100 billion from this. An expert committee has also been set up to advise Gotabaya Rajapaksa on how to deal with the financial crisis.
