THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government will look into the possibility of reinstating the scholarship announced for students from poor families who have secured high merit admission in self-financing medical colleges, which was stalled following a High Court order.

'Kerala Kaumudi' had reported on Friday that the students are in crisis without getting the scholarship.

The Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed in the Supreme Court in 2020 will be asked to be considered expeditiously.

The apex court had directed the state government to enact legislation after quashing the notification to charge Rs 5 lakh in addition to the fees from NRI-quota students in order to raise funds to provide scholarships to poor students.

Justice R Rajendrababu, chairman of the Fee Fixation Committee, said the court would be informed of the scholarship as per the previous orders of the Supreme Court.

Discussion with managements

The government will advise managements not to force those eligible for scholarships to pay fees. There have been complaints of students being pressured during exams.

The office of the health minister said it would hold discussions with the managements soon.
